New Apple Announcements – What it Means For You.

Whilst a lot of announcements were made at 3am this morning Melbourne time, I am going to focus here on the 6s range of handsets.

Firstly, and most importantly, the date of shipment in Australia – 25 September (remember this is the date that the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plu will be available from but this is not necessarily the date you will get your handset. Apple is notorious for short supplies early to enhance demand.)

Firstly, here are some of the new things that you can expect from the new range of handsets. Here are some of the upgrades:

New Touch Capabilities – Apple is changing the way you will use your phone. The pressure you use on the touch screen will control what your phone does. Known as 3D Touch, the name reflects the fact that there are 3 ways you can use your screen with 3 levels of pressure. Light tapping enters preview mode. Regular tapping works as normal. Firm tapping has other options depending on the apps you are using

To give you an idea of how 3D touch might work, here’s how Techcrunch describes it. .

A few examples of 3D Touch on the iPhone include: lightly tap on the camera icon to get camera options, and press harder to go straight into selfie mode, lightly tap on various app to choose to go into various parts of the app, lightly tap on a flight number and get flight-tracking information as a ‘peek’, or Force Touch an address to get a preview within the Maps app.

New hardware and operating system – With all the handset enhancements, Apple have added a 64-bit A9 processor, mean that data and apps can work faster. The A9 chip is 70% faster tha the A8 chip used in previous iPhone 6 models. This can als help with battery life. Improved connectivity means that you’ll get faster internet speeds on Australia’s 4G networks (making your home DSL connections look positively ancient in comparison.) Added enhancements come with the release of iOS 9. Taking a leaf out of Android’s book, this update will allow for better app switching and multitasking. The operating system update will enhance battery life. It’s also available on previous iPhone and iPad models. The new handsets will be made from Apple’s new custom alloy, a similar alloy to that used on the aerospace industry.

Improved Camera hardware and software – The previous iPhone 6 had an 8MP camera. This has been updated to a 12MP camera on the iPhone 6s. The front camera has been improved too – upgraded from 1.2MP to 5MP. The new handsets will also support 4K video recording. This means you will be able to take some amazing footage considering that this is a mobile device.

Additional Colour – The iPhone 6s will be available in an extra colour – Rose Gold.

Pricing – At the time of writing, Australian carriers have not released their pricing. If you are planning on buying either 6s model outright it’s not going to be cheap. The entry level iPhone 6s with 16GB of memory will retail for $1079.The 128GB iPhone 6s Plus will retail for $1529
